Hospital Pay for Performance Program
In 1989, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan launched one of the nation's first incentive programs for participating hospitals. Developed in collaboration with hospital leaders and physicians, the Hospital Pay for Performance program includes initiatives specifically tailored for large, medium, small and rural hospitals.
The program's outstanding results have earned several national awards from institutions such as Harvard Medical School and the National Business Coalition on Health.
Participating hospitals outperform U.S. hospitals as a whole.
Key Components of the Pay for Performance (P4P) Program:
- Individual hospitals can earn up to 5 percent in additional payment for collective performance on a series of quality measures.
- Hospitals are evaluated on quality, efficiency and participation in collaborative quality initiatives.
