Michigan Bariatric Surgery Collaborative

The Michigan Blues, the Michigan Surgical Collaboration for Outcomes Research and Evaluation and Michigan hospitals that offer bariatric surgery formed this collaborative to help make weight-reducing bariatric surgery safer and less costly across the state.

Data analysis on 6,000 patients at 22 hospitals from October 2006 through March 2008 revealed:

  • Extended length of stays declined by 20 percent
  • Readmissions following surgery were down by 35 percent
  • Overall adverse events were reduced by 22 percent
  • Overall complication rates decreased by 13 percent
