BCBSM Cardiovascular Consortium Quality Initiative on Coronary Angioplasty (BMC2)
The first collaborative quality initiative (CQI) in the Value Partnerships program began in 1997 when five core hospitals agreed to share data in an effort to improve patient outcomes for angioplasty.
Today, 31 hospitals participate in this initiative, and the results have been outstanding. Key to the initiative's success has been a focus on understanding "what works" and rigorous reengineering of care practices to assure that patients routinely receive care guided by best practices.
Patients throughout Michigan have benefited from their hospital's participation on the BMC2 initiative. An analysis shows that participation in this initiative is associated with the following results:
- 32 percent reduction in hospital deaths
- 60 percent reduction in contrast-induced nephropathy
- 30 percent reduction in blood transfusions after angioplasty
- 32 percent reduction in vascular complications
- 31 percent reduction in emergency revascularization
- 19 percent reduction in unplanned coronary artery bypass surgery
- 29 percent reduction in strokes or mini-strokes
- 19 percent reduction in gastrointestinal bleeding
